Getting a taste for what could be coming.
With talk of the Closed Beta tester ship strongly suggested to be a Battleship, I figured I would try my hand with this class. With update 3.1 coming, containing the first American Battleship line, and from where the possible reward ship will come, the game currently only has this class from one other nation, Japan.
Firstly, I don't believe they will fit my playstyle. Granted, there will be some subtle to major differences between how the two nation's lines will play out, but so far, I am not liking my experience. To me, they are big, slow to get going, slow to maneuver, slow to get the turrets into a good firing position and the shells from the guns are taking the slow train to their target, if it's still there when the finally arrive.
My observations are based not only on the Japanese Battleships, the tier IV Myogi and preceding tier III Kawachi, but just like as they were in real life, that's how they were designed and built. The upsides? They can take on riduclious amounts of damage and when the shells hit their targets, return that damage back, in spades.
For me, coming from the fast, highly maneuverable and extremely vulnerable Destroyers, it feels like I have traded in my finely tuned, high performance sports car for a Greyhound bus. Don't get me wrong here, I had the odd good game in them....
....not stellar, but I am honestly trying. I have read about some of the adventures that really good Battleship player have experienced. They have the skills to make them work more consistently and effectively then what I have managed to accomplish to date. Some of those skills include, leading their shots for maximum effect, good map positioning and awareness, luck with getting support with other players not in a Division (Ship's version of a Platoon/Flight) and most importantly, patience to bring all that and more into their "battle package".
It's not that I don't want to learn, it's not that I am afraid to step out of my comfort zone and try something new. Part of it comes from not being the patient type for this playstyle and the frustration with myself with under-performing, despite my honest efforts. However, I haven't given up yet, since I have seen the next ship, the tier V Kongo in action and curious to see I how I do in that myself.
For now, I am not enjoying myself, just like not everyone likes the taste of liver and onions.
