Now, I have crossed the line to tier V with Japanese Destroyers in World of Warships and decided to perform an unscientific, statistically ignored experiment. One battle each with Minekaze, Gremyashchy and Nicholas, to see how they fare against each other, being of the same tier and class.
For speed, the Minekaze seems to be the best of the trio, very agile in maneuvers and quick in the straight line. The Nicholas has shown me the amazing ability to take a crazy amount of enemy punishment, stay afloat and keep on fighting. The Gremyashchy has always put a smile on my faces with it's guns, that when they reach out and touch someone, they will know it and remember it.
However, I have found all three ships do have some drawbacks. The Gremyashchy has very slow moving turrets, but this can be compensated for with picking the right skills for the Captain. I found the Nicholas' torpedoes to be rather meh, a little slow and not really packing the punch I would expect. The Minekaze is extremely fragile, a few hits and most of the ship was out of action.
I am basing this on just the feel of them during the game. Although I have played the Gremy the most, I have tried to keep and open mind and careful eye on what the ships can do, want them to do and how they deliver during the battles.
Speaking of a careful eye....
It would seem the role of Destroyers have already been predetermined by some. Not that I wholly disagree with this, since they are the fastest ships in the game and with the proper use of their smokescreens, can cover their retreat very effectively, when detected. But, to expect anyone who is playing a Destroyer to be a scout, all the time? My answer to that is "I don't think so, Chuck-o".
If I decide to rig for a silent running and hunt Carriers, that's exactly what I am going to do. I am not going to be pigeonholed into a role that will limit my capacity for fun and battle effectiveness. I need to be as flexible as I can, maintain the ability to adapt to the changing battle conditions, not be stuck in a sole purpose of gameplay, determined by others. Just like the mindset that all Light Tanks in World of Tanks are scouts.
An AMX 40 would like to have words with them, about that.
